Target Information

BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that can inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family form dimers to modulate apoptosis. Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak are involved in cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Constitutive expression of BCL-2, such as translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. In most follicular lymphomas, neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2 alpha protein, while normal germinal centers are negative. Two transcript variants produced by alternate splicing differ at their C-terminal ends. Overexpression of BCL-2 is linked to cancers such as B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
