BCL-2는 세포사멸(apoptosis)의 주요 조절 인자로, 세포사멸을 억제하거나 촉진하는 역할을 합니다. BCL-2 패밀리 단백질은 서로 이합체를 형성하여 세포사멸을 조절하며, Bag1은 BCL-2와 이합체를 형성하여 항-세포사멸 효과를 강화합니다. Bax와 Bak은 미토콘드리아에서 cytochrome c 방출을 유도하여 세포사멸을 시작합니다. BCL-2의 과발현은 B-cell lymphoma 및 전립선암 등 다양한 인간 암과 연관되어 있으며, 특히 BCL2 유전자의 전좌는 여포성 림프종의 원인으로 알려져 있습니다.
