Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation reaction of superoxide radical anion (O₂) to hydrogen peroxide, which is then converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme found in all eukaryotic species; homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme containing one Cu and one Zn ion per subunit.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme; 80 kDa tetrameric form located in the mitochondrial matrix near the respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular form; heparin-binding multimer of disulfide-linked dimers expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase that delivers Cu to SOD1 and activates it by direct Cu cofactor insertion.
