Target Information
USP7 (also known as HAUSP) is a ubiquitin-specific protease that cleaves ubiquitin from its substrates. Ubiquitylation typically regulates protein stability and degradation; thus, HAUSP activity stabilizes its substrate proteins. HAUSP antagonizes Mdm2, the E3 ubiquitin ligase for p53, preventing p53 degradation and promoting its stabilization under stress conditions. This function suggests a potential tumor suppressor role. Additionally, HAUSP may provide an alternative pathway for protecting cells from oncogenic insults, independent of ARF-mediated p53 activation.
