Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is subsequently converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:

• SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular, homodimeric enzyme (32 kDa), present in all eukaryotic species.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme (80 kDa tetramer), localized in the mitochondrial matrix near the respiratory chain.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer, mainly expressed in human lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for SOD1, delivering Cu ions for activation.
