Target Information

Oxygen radicals damage chromosomal DNA, causing cell death and mutations. While much research has focused on repairing 8-oxo-G lesions, free radicals create various other damaged DNA sites.
The human NTH1 repair protein acts on many of these oxidatively damaged DNA sites.
A homologue of E. coli Endonuclease III, NTH is a DNA glycosylase with apurinic/apyrimidinic lyase activity.
NTH protein has broad substrate specificity, including numerous pyrimidine ring saturation and fragmentation products.
Research indicates NTH plays a crucial role in the removal of oxidative base lesions in mitochondrial DNA.
