The protein encoded by this gene is part of a potentially heterotetrameric voltage-independent potassium channel activated by intracellular calcium. Activation leads to membrane hyperpolarization, promoting calcium influx. It may represent the predominant calcium-activated potassium channel in T-lymphocytes and could form a distinct subfamily within the KCNN family.
