Target Information

Signal-mediated nuclear import and export occur through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), composed of approximately 50 unique nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin is produced via proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor, generating both 98 kDa and 96 kDa nucleoporins localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC. Rat studies indicate that the 98 kDa nucleoporin acts as a docking site for transport substrates.
The human gene encoding this protein can fuse with other genes in certain leukemias (AML, T-ALL) and is located in the 11p15.5 imprinted gene domain, a tumor-suppressor region associated with several cancers and syndromes including Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, and others.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, not all of which are fully characterized.
