Target Information
Signal-mediated nuclear import and export proceed through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), composed of ~50 unique proteins known as nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin is produced via proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor, yielding both 98 kDa and 96 kDa nucleoporins localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC.
Studies indicate that NUP98 acts as a docking site for transport substrates. The human NUP98 gene can fuse with other genes in chromosomal translocations linked to AML and T-ALL. It resides in the imprinted gene domain of 11p15.5, a tumor suppressor region associated with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and various cancers (lung, ovarian, breast).
Alternative splicing generates several transcript variants, not all fully characterized.
