Target Information

Beta tubulins are one of two core protein families (alpha and beta tubulins) that heterodimerize to form microtubules. Beta-III tubulin is mainly expressed in neurons and may play roles in neurogenesis, axon guidance, and maintenance. Mutations in the beta tubulin gene can cause congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 3. Beta-III tubulin is also detected in Sertoli cells and transiently in non-neuronal embryonic tissues. Tubulin phosphorylation and glutamylation are involved in microtubule dynamics and cell cycle regulation.
Because beta-tubulin is ubiquitously expressed in all eukaryotic cells, it is commonly used as a loading control in protein detection assays such as Western blotting.
