Target Information
NeuroD1 is a transcriptional activator involved in neurogenesis and functions as a differentiation factor. It binds to the insulin gene E-box, requiring dimerization with another basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) protein for efficient DNA binding.
Mutations in NEUROD1 are associated with maturity onset diabetes of the young type VI (MODY6), a non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus characterized by autosomal dominant inheritance, onset in young adulthood, and defective insulin secretion.
