Carbonic anhydrase (CA)는 이산화탄소와 물의 빠른 상호전환을 촉진하는 효소로, 모든 포유류 조직에 풍부하게 존재합니다. Hypoxia에 의해 유도되는 여러 유전자 중 Carbonic Anhydrase IX (CA IX)는 세포막 내 안정성과 위치로 인해 가장 강하게 유도되는 유전자 중 하나입니다.
CA는 정상 조직에서 수소이온(H⁺) 흐름을 조절하여 pH를 조절하는 데 중요한 역할을 하며, 저산소 상태에서의 세포 사멸과 밀접한 관련이 있습니다. 따라서 CA IX 억제는 저산소 상태에서 세포 사멸을 증가시키며, CA IX는 저산소 상태의 신뢰할 수 있는 조직화학적 마커로 간주됩니다.
