Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions, and is abundant in mammalian tissues. CA IX is one of the most inducible genes under hypoxia via HIF-1 alpha due to its stability and membrane localization. Carbonic anhydrases regulate pH by modulating hydrogen ion flux, playing a role in cell death under hypoxia. Inhibition of CA IX increases cell death under hypoxic conditions, making CA IX a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
