Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainite receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recently, glutamate has also been shown to regulate enzymes producing second messengers via G-protein-coupled metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
- Group-I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5) stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release from internal stores.
- Group-II and Group-III receptors (mGluR2, mGluR3) inhibit adenylyl cyclase.
