Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. It acts on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors, which are involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recently, glutamate has been shown to regulate enzymes producing second messengers via specific receptors coupled to G-proteins, known as metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs).
- Group I receptors (mGluR1a, mGluR5): Stimulate phospholipase C, increasing phosphoinositide turnover and calcium release.
- Group II and III receptors (mGluR2, mGluR3): Inhibit adenylyl cyclase.
