Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (a2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural features with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3, C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting a broad binding capacity for diverse ligands. This enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma.
Alpha 2M interacts with and captures virtually any proteinase, functioning as a panprotease inhibitor. In the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, Alpha 2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting a potential role in AD pathogenesis.
