Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (a2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits.
Alpha 2M shares with other alpha-macroglobulins, such as complement components C3 and C4 and the pregnancy zone protein (PZP), a remarkable binding capacity for various ligands.
This property enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma.
Alpha 2M interacts with and captures nearly any proteinase, functioning as a panprotease inhibitor.
In the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, Alpha 2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, supporting its potential role in AD pathophysiology.
