Target Information
ERK1 and ERK2 are widely expressed and play critical roles in regulating meiosis, mitosis, and postmitotic functions in differentiated cells. They are activated by various stimuli including growth factors, cytokines, viral infection, and G protein-coupled receptor ligands. Upon activation, Ras interacts with Raf kinase, which phosphorylates MEK1/2. MEK1/2 subsequently phosphorylates ERK1/2 on tyrosine/threonine residues. Activated ERKs then phosphorylate cytoplasmic targets or translocate to the nucleus to activate transcription factors such as c-Fos and Elk-1.
