SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus causing illnesses from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The CoV Spike (S) protein plays critical roles in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a key target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, showing higher affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically interacts with ACE2 receptors on target cells.
