Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein acts as a glutamate carboxypeptidase on various substrates, including folate and N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate. It is expressed in multiple tissues such as prostate, nervous system, and kidney.
Mutations may lead to impaired folate absorption and hyperhomocysteinemia. Expression in the brain is linked to glutamate excitotoxicity, while upregulation in prostate cancer cells makes it a useful diagnostic and prognostic marker.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
