Target Information
Human echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 1 (EML1) is a strong candidate for the Usher syndrome type 1A gene. Usher syndromes (USHs) are genetic disorders characterized by congenital deafness, retinitis pigmentosa, and vestibular dysfunction of variable onset and severity depending on genetic type.
USHs are categorized as:
- Type I (USH1A–USH1F): most severe form
- Type II (USH2A, USH2B)
- Type III (USH3)
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
