Target Information
Tissues with few or no mitochondria, such as erythrocytes and tumor cells, rely on glycolysis for ATP production. The end products of glycolysis, pyruvate and lactate, must be exported to prevent toxic accumulation. H⁺/monocarboxylate transporters mediate the transport of these metabolites.
Human MCT2 exhibits high affinity for pyruvate transport.
