Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and isoelectric pH between 4.9–7.8.
Different epithelia express specific cytokeratin subtypes, which correlate with epithelial type and differentiation stage. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are valuable in distinguishing epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies aid in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, and flow cytometry.
Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastasis.
