Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system, arising from the long MBP gene (“Golli-MBP”). This gene contains additional upstream exons and undergoes alternative splicing to produce two sets of MBP-related transcripts:
- Golli-MBP transcripts – contain unique Golli exons spliced in-frame with MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
- Classic MBP transcripts – contain only MBP exons, producing well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure indicates that MBP and Golli transcription units are functionally and regulatory interlinked.
