Target Information
GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein)은 class III intermediate filament 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 주로 중추신경계의 성상교세포(astrocyte)와 특정 astroglia에서 강하게 발현됩니다. 또한 말초 신경계의 위성세포(satellite cells) 및 비수초성 슈반세포(non-myelinating Schwann cells)에서도 발현됩니다. 신경줄기세포(neural stem cells) 역시 GFAP을 강하게 발현합니다.
GFAP 항체는 astrocytic 세포의 마커로 유용하며, astrocytic 세포에서 유래한 다양한 뇌종양에서도 GFAP이 강하게 발현됩니다. 그 외에도 수정체 상피세포, 간의 Kupffer 세포, 일부 타액선 종양 세포 및 적혈구에서도 보고되었습니다. GFAP은 발달 과정에서 astrocyte를 다른 교세포와 구별하는 데 사용됩니다. GFAP 유전자의 돌연변이는 희귀 신경질환인 Alexander disease를 유발합니다. 또한 이 유전자는 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 다양한 isoform을 생성합니다.
