Target Information
BST2 (also known as CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth. Its surface expression on fibroblast cell lines supports stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines.
BST2 is highly expressed during B-cell maturation (from pro-B precursors to plasma cells), as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, DCs, and myeloma cells.
Research indicates BST2 inhibits retrovirus release from human cells, an action counteracted by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu. Depletion of BST2 abolishes the viral requirement for Vpu, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for HIV/AIDS.
BST2 dysfunction has also been linked to stomatitis.
