Target Information

Nuclear lamins form a network of intermediate-type filaments at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear membrane. Two main subtypes of nuclear lamins can be distinguished: A-type lamins and B-type lamins.
A-type lamins include lamin A, lamin C, and lamin Adel 10, all produced from the same gene via alternative splicing.
B-type lamins include lamin B1 and lamin B2, produced from distinct genes.

Mutations in A-type lamins are associated with several dominant genetic disorders such as:

  • Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy with conduction-system disease
  • Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy

A-type lamins are expressed during cell differentiation and interact with chromatin, suggesting a regulatory role in differential gene expression.
