Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in tumor cells and plays an important role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. The c-myc oncogene regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, and deregulated expression induces apoptosis in various cell types. Antibodies against c-myc epitopes recognize Myc-tagged proteins fused to amino- or carboxy-termini.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene is found in multiple human tumors including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. N-Myc amplification occurs in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus to immunoglobulin loci is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders. Aberrant c-myc expression is observed in tumors of diverse origins including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
