Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as pathological processes like arthritis and metastasis.
MMP12 specifically degrades soluble and insoluble elastin and may play a role in aneurysm formation and emphysema development. The MMP12 gene is part of a cluster located on chromosome 11q22.3.
