Target Information

ADARB1 catalyzes the hydrolytic deamination of adenosine to inosine in double-stranded RNA (A-to-I RNA editing). This process can affect gene expression and function through multiple mechanisms:

  • Alters codons and amino acid sequences during mRNA translation
  • Modifies splice site recognition during pre-mRNA splicing
  • Influences RNA stability and genetic stability in viral RNA genomes
  • Affects RNA structure-dependent activities such as microRNA production and protein-RNA interactions

It can edit both viral and cellular RNAs, acting at multiple or specific sites. Known substrates include BLCAP, GRIA2, GRIK2, HTR2C, GABRA3, and KCNA1. Site-specific RNA editing results in amino acid substitutions that alter protein function.
ADARB1 can exert a proviral effect on HIV-1 by enhancing replication through both editing-dependent and editing-independent mechanisms. It can inhibit cell proliferation and migration and stimulate exocytosis.
