Target Information
DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp, are putative RNA helicases. They are involved in various cellular processes requiring alteration of RNA secondary structure, including translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and assembly of ribosomes and spliceosomes.
Some members of this family are associated with embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division.
The DDX4 gene encodes a DEAD box protein homologous to VASA proteins found in Drosophila and other species. It is specifically expressed in germ cell lineages of both sexes and plays a key role in germ cell development. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
