Target Information

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces final maturation of erythroid cells and production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases as cells mature.
In fetuses, hepatocytes are the main EPO source, while in adults, interstitial kidney cells dominate. EPO expression increases under hypoxia, and low levels are also found in lung and brain tissues. Recent studies suggest EPO may contribute to neuronal protection and tissue repair.
