Target Information

Excitatory amino acid transporter 2 (EAAT2) is a membrane-bound solute transporter protein responsible for clearing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate from the extracellular space at synapses in the central nervous system. Proper glutamate clearance prevents neuronal damage from excessive activation of glutamate receptors. Mutations or decreased expression of EAAT2 are associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been identified.
