Target Information
The SMN complex catalyzes the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), essential components of the spliceosome involved in pre-mRNA splicing. Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) form a heptameric ring on the Sm site of snRNA to create core snRNPs. In the cytosol, Sm proteins are held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by CLNS1A. The SMN complex dissociates CLNS1A and transfers Sm proteins to form active SMN-Sm complexes for nuclear transport. GEMIN5 functions as the snRNA-binding protein of the SMN complex.
