Target Information
GRP78 is a 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein belonging to the HSP70 family. It resides in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and associates with newly synthesized secretory and membrane proteins.
GRP78 interacts with misfolded proteins, marking them for degradation, and contains the conserved KDEL sequence at its C-terminus, ensuring ER retention via the KDEL receptor.
It is essential for protein folding, ER homeostasis, and apoptosis prevention. GRP78 serves as a biomarker for hypoglycemia and has neuroprotective functions against oxidative stress. Reduced GRP78 levels are observed in Alzheimer's Disease, and its induction is linked to drug resistance in cancer therapy.
