Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid long protein hormone with important effects in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function.
It is approximately 16 kDa in mass and encoded by the obese (ob) gene.
Leptin is expressed predominantly by adipocytes, with smaller amounts secreted by stomach epithelium and placenta.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells.
Leptin influences feeding behavior, energy expenditure, thermogenesis, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth.
Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
