Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor essential for early nervous system development. It is expressed in the fetal brain and is necessary for the proper formation and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate gene expression critical for neuronal circuit formation in the central nervous system.
High ASCL1 expression is observed in neuroendocrine tumors such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, making it a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features.
The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, suggesting potential involvement in inherited diseases.
