Target Information
Arginase catalyzes the hydrolysis of arginine to ornithine and urea. Two mammalian isoforms (types I and II) differ in tissue distribution, subcellular localization, and physiological function. The type II isoform is mitochondrial and expressed mainly in extra-hepatic tissues such as the kidney. It may play a role in nitric oxide and polyamine metabolism. Transcript variants due to alternative polyadenylation have been described.
