Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, indicating a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. It also regulates short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity and serves as a widely used marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene can lead to X-linked mental retardation.
