This gene encodes a protein required for the formation of hypusine, a unique amino acid formed by posttranslational modification of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A. The encoded enzyme catalyzes the first step of hypusine formation by transferring the butylamine moiety of spermidine to a specific lysine residue of the eIF5A precursor, forming an intermediate deoxyhypusine residue. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been observed.
