Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. Several isoforms differ in their primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme, first discovered in the GPx family.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed only at the gastrointestinal tract epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma GPx, mainly produced in the kidney and released into blood circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Expressed in most tissues, reduces hydroperoxides including those in membranes or lipids.
- All mammalian GPx family members, except for the Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific GPx5 isoforms, possess selenocysteine at the active site.
