Target Information
Collagen I is a fibril-forming Type I collagen composed of two alpha-1 chains and one alpha-2 chain. It is abundant in connective tissues such as bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon.
Mutations in the COL1A2 gene (encoding the alpha-2 chain) are associated with osteogenesis imperfecta types I–IV, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIB, recessive classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, idiopathic osteoporosis, and atypical Marfan syndrome.
Symptoms linked to COL1A2 mutations tend to be milder than those caused by COL1A1 mutations, reflecting their differing roles in matrix integrity.
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22 (where Collagen Type I genes and PDGFβ gene are located) are associated with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, caused by unregulated PDGFβ expression.
Two transcripts have been identified, resulting from alternate polyadenylation signals.
