PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A)
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, the major acid protease in the stomach. Pepsin is produced by removal of a 41-amino acid segment from the N-terminus of pepsinogen.
It is synthesized in the stomach lining, activated by hydrochloric acid, and functions optimally at pH 1–3. Pepsin cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids, showing broad substrate specificity.
PGA5 belongs to the pepsin family (subfamily A1) and is the predominant endopeptidase in gastric juice. It is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
