Target Information
Ribosomes, the organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The RPL8 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L2P family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in the cytoplasm and associates with 5.8S rRNA, likely participating in aminoacyl-tRNA binding and forming part of the elongation factor 2-binding site. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
