Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein essential for cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer formation. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, linking to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless, influencing morphogenesis and cell proliferation.
It is expressed in various hair follicle cells and plays roles in several cancers, including pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting transcription of genes like cyclin D and c-myc, which drive cell proliferation.
