Neurofilaments are intermediate filament proteins specifically found in neurons, composed predominantly of three major proteins: NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H. NF-L is the light or low molecular weight microfilament subunit (~70 kDa), while NF-H is the heavy subunit (~180–220 kDa). These proteins are involved in the maintenance of neuronal caliber, and their expression is tissue-specific and developmentally regulated.
