Target Information
ZO-1 forms complexes with ZO-2 or ZO-3 and associates with claudin, occludin, and F-actin at tight junction strands, linking the actin cytoskeleton to the junction. ZO-1 expression is reduced in many breast cancer lines. ZO-2 and ZO-3 are expressed in epithelial tight junctions, while ZO-1 is also found at cardiac myocyte junctions. ZO-1 may play a role in cell-cell junction signal transduction. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms are known. Diseases associated with ZO-1 dysfunction include Celiac Disease and Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome.
