POU5F1 (Oct-4)는 초기 발생 단계에서 최초로 보고된 옥타머 결합 전사인자로, 배아줄기세포의 형성과 유지에 핵심적인 역할을 합니다. 이 단백질은 세포 대체 치료를 위한 줄기세포 생성 연구에 유용하며, Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, c-Myc 등의 전사인자와 함께 발현되어 유도만능줄기세포(iPS cell)를 생성할 수 있습니다. 최근에는 바이러스 도입 없이 플라스미드 발현을 통해 iPS 세포를 생성하는 연구가 진행되어, 재생의학적 응용 가능성이 높습니다.
