Target Information
Presenilins are components of the gamma-secretase protein complex required for intramembranous processing of type I transmembrane proteins such as Notch and beta-amyloid precursor protein.
Notch signaling mediates various developmental cell fates, while processing of beta-amyloid precursor protein generates neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides—the major component of senile plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
This gene encodes a protein essential for Notch pathway signaling and gamma-secretase activity.
