Target Information
Tuberculosis is a chronic bacterial infection and remains one of the leading causes of death among young adults worldwide. Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the alveoli via airborne transmission and is engulfed by alveolar macrophages but resists destruction. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it is suspected that Mycobacterium tuberculosis survives by preventing phagosome–lysosome fusion. As the bacteria accumulate, they form tubercles, spread to lymph nodes, and cause systemic infection. Despite available treatments, the emergence of multiple-drug resistant (MDR) strains poses a significant public health threat.
